Easy & Quick Dal Fry Tadka Recipe for Beginners in 20-minute

Dal fry tadka recipe is one of the popular and easiest dal recipes prepared all over India. Usually, a dish made with toor or masoor dal, this simple yet comfortingly delicious bowl of dal fry tadka is full of rich protein and carbs. This authentic Dhaba style dal tadka recipe takes very less time to prepare.
Dal is a staple food in every Indian household and could be easily prepared by almost anyone. While most of us live in cities away from our hometown, and sometimes amongst our busy schedule, we do crave for a delicious dal fry tadka meal which combined with jeera rice or ghee rice tastes absolutely divine.
And being a bachelor myself, I personally understand those yearning for dal. So I figured this Dal fry tadka recipe would be perfect for those you are staying away from home and are looking for a simple dal recipe to comfort their homesickness.
Besides, it is a quick recipe so if you are super lazy to cook a good meal for yourself, then some cooked rice and a dal fry tadka will make your complete meal. At times, I feel super tired and super lazy, so just 1 cup of rice, dal tadka, and 2 roasted papads work wonders for me.
In this dal tadka recipe, I have used a lot of ghee (clarified butter) for the tempering part. But, if you don’t have ghee at home, then you can also use the same amount of refined oil. So let’s start with our 20-minute Dal fry tadka recipe.

Dal Fry Tadka Recipe | Dal Tadka Dhaba Style
To make this dal tadka recipe, you would need,
- Masoor Dal
- Toor Dal
- Turmeric Powder
- Oil
- Water
- Cumin seeds
- Ghee
- Dry Red Chilli
- Tej Patta (Bay Leaf)
- Hing
- Garlic
- Green Chili
- Ginger
- Onion
- Kashmiri Red Chili Powder
- Coriander Powder
- Tomato
- Coriander Leaves
- Kasuri Methi
- Kasuri Methi
- Salt
– Take a bowl, add 2 tbsp Masoor Dal, ½ cup Toor Dal and rinse them properly. Now, in a pressure cooker, add ½ tsp salt, ¼ tsp turmeric powder, 1 ½ cup water, and stir them well. Pressure cook it for 5 whistles or until the dal is cooked properly.
– After it is cooked, add some water and keep it aside. Take a large Kadhai, bring it to heat on low flame. Add 2 tbsp ghee, 1 bay leaf, ½ tsp cumin seeds, 2 dried red chilies, and a pinch of hing and saute them for a minute or two.
– Then, add 1 inch chopped ginger, 2 cloves of garlic chopped, 1 chopped green chili and saute them properly.
– Add 1 medium chopped onion, 1/s tsp of chili powder, ¼ tsp of turmeric powder, ½ tsp of salt, and ½ tsp of coriander powder while keeping the flame on low saute it till the onions turn translucent. Add 1 medium chopped tomatoes and saute till it melts.
– Now, add the cooked dal into this tadka over and simmer it for 5 to 10 minutes on a medium flame.
– Top it with 1 tsp of Kasuri methi, 2 tbsp of coriander, and ¼ tsp of garam masala. Mix them well.
– Your Dal fry Tadka is ready to be served. Serve it with steamed rice or Jeera fried rice.

How to Make Homemade Yellow Dal Tadka Recipe?
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp Masoor Dal (Red Lentil)
- ½ cup Toor Dal (Pigeon pea)
- ½ tsp Turmeric Powder
- 1 tsp Oil
- 1 ½ cup Water
- 1 tsp Cumin seeds
- 3 tbsp Ghee
- 3 Dry Red Chilli
- 1 Tej Patta (Bay Leaf)
- 1 pinch Hing
- 2 Garlic chopped
- 1 Green Chili chopped
- 1 inch Ginger chopped
- 1 medium Onion chopped
- ¾ tsp Kashmiri Red Chili Powder
- ½ tsp Coriander Powder
- 1 medium Tomato chopped
- 3 tbsp Coriander Leaves finely chopped
- 1 tsp Kasuri Methi crushed
- ¼ tsp Kasuri Methi
- Salt as needed
Instructions
- Take a bowl, add 2 tbsp Masoor Dal, ½ cup Toor Dal and rinse them properly.

Notes
- You can use vegetable refined oil to cook the dal instead of Ghee.
- You can choose the consistency of dal by adding or reducing the amount of water.
- It is better if you can soak the dal before cooking for a 30 to 40 minutes.
- You can increase or decrease the amount of green chili according to your preference.
- Preferable use Ghee for tempering to enhance its taste.
