Butter Pav Bhaji Recipe | Easy Bombay Pav Bhaji Recipe

A butter pav bhaji recipe is a simple curry recipe made with mashed potatoes and vegetables. Some basic pav bhaji ingredients used are tomatoes, potatoes, capsicums, beans, and onions. Sometimes some vendors use green peas as well. A special pav bhaji masala is used along with the other ingredients which can be easily found in any Indian general stores.

To make a butter pav bhaji, all the onions, garlic-ginger paste, tomatoes (bhaji) are first sauteed in butter. Then, all the other ingredients like mashed boiled vegetables, pav bhaji masala are added. You can add any vegetables you like in your pav bhaji recipe. It’s your recipe, so make any combination of veggies you like. Sometimes, I add cabbage and cauliflower to my pav bhaji recipe.

This bhaji is served with a buttered masala pav. Pav is an Indian bun made with all-purpose flour. A pav bhaji is incomplete without a pav. The pav bhaji that is served in restaurants or by street vendors mostly has a slightly orangish-red color. But, if you prepare at home, you might not get that color. You can use Kashmiri red chilies to get that color.

Pav bhaji is very famous in Mumbai. For Mumbaikars, Pav bhaji means love. You can find vendors selling pav bhaji till late at night. This dish is so satisfying in terms of taste and hunger that if anyone doesn’t want to cook their dinner, then they just go out, eat pav bhaji and come back home. Hunger satisfied!!

  • Green Capsicum
  • Green Chilli
  • Green Peas
  • Beans
  • Carrot
  • Potato
  • Tomato
  • Butter
  • Garlic paste
  • Ginger paste
  • Pav Bhaji Masala
  • Kashmiri Red Chilli Powder
  • Onion
  • Lemon
  • Coriander Leaves
  • Pav
  • Salt

– In a kadhai or a big pan, take 2 tbsp butter. Keep the flame on high and add the capsicum, green chili and sort it for 3 to 4 minutes.

– Now, reduce the flame to low, now add green peas, beans, carrot, potato, finely chopped tomato in it, and saute the well for a minute.

– Next, add the salt as per taste, and saute them well for a few minutes. Remember to use less salt. This is because butter already contains salt. And without butter, pav bhaji doesn’t taste like a pav bhaji. Now, add butter, ginger garlic paste, 1 tbsp Pav Bhaji Masala, and mix well.

– Take a potato masher, start mashing all the vegetables directly in the Kadhai or Pan. Take 5 minutes to properly smash the vegetables. Make sure that there are no lumps of vegetables left.

– Remove this mixture on another plate and keep aside. Now, in the same kadhai, add 3 tbsp of butter, 1 cup chopped Onions, and a little salt, and let it cook until the onions turn translucent.

– Now, add the mashed vegetable that was kept aside. Add 4 to 5 tbsp of water and mix them well. Again, using a masher, mash them well so that the onions are mashed with the vegetables.

– Let it cook till the bhaji thickens according to your consistency.
