Almost a year after Blue Whale challenge, now it’s the WhatsApp Momo Challenge that is driving the teenagers to commit suicide. The WhatsApp Momo Challenge went viral on social media especially on WhatsApp which allegedly led to the death of a 12-year-old girl in Argentina, the Buenos Aires Times reported.
What is WhatsApp Momo Challenge?
The WhatsApp Momo Challenge is the new viral WhatsApp dare challenge which allegedly involves challenges that encourage the victims to engage themselves in some violent acts and then eventually end with suicide.
The Momo Challenge started on Facebook where the members were challenged to communicate with an unknown number, The Sun reported.
After a contact with the user is established, the Momo account sends some challenges that have to be completed to meet Momo.
These challenges are violent that ends with a suicide. And, if the user disagrees to follow, then Momo threatens the user with some violent images.
This account is linked to three numbers in Mexico, Japan, and Columbia. Its social media account name is ‘Momo’ and uses an image of a doll with monstrous looks having large eyes, and a wide mouth to increase curiosity in children.
The image of Momo was taken from Instagram and then it was circulated on WhatsApp, according to police.
Deaths due to WhatsApp Momo Challenge
Police in Argentina has linked a death of a 12-year-old girl with the WhatsApp dare game. The girl filmed some of her activities on her phone before committing suicide. Authorities suspected that someone might have encouraged her for taking such a drastic step, the Buenos Aires Times reported.
A police statement said: “The phone has been hacked to find footage and WhatsApp chats, and now the alleged adolescent with whom she exchanged those messages is being sought.”They have also issued a warning for the parents to keep a track of their child’s browsing history.
This terrific game has also been added to Minecraft, an online based Microsoft game which is very popular with kids and teens. This button has been added by modders. “A parent has also complained about an ad promoting Momo has been appeared in YouTube video.
This Momo challenge can be next Blue Whale challenge. The Minecraft mod adds an avatar of Momo, which chases the player while holding a phone flashing the WhatsApp icon.
Microsoft will be taking some steps cramping this mod
Microsoft will be taking some necessary step on the sick game “Momo challenge”. This challenge had recently infiltrated the most populated game “Minecraft”.
A distorted image of Momo recently appeared as an avatar in the game. It appeared in a mod version of “Minecraft” made by a modder.
This avatar reportedly chases the player while holding a phone which flashes WhatsApp logo on it.
Microsoft told Fox News that it is still dealing with this mod. “This content, which was independently developed by a third party, does not align with our values and is not part of the official Minecraft game. This is a misuse of the platform and we are taking action to restrict access to the mod,” as said by a Microsoft spokesperson.
Police forces all over the world have already been given warnings about this game. Momo threatens through sending various threatening messages like laying a curse or it would appear in the night, according to Mexican Police.
According to WhatsApp statement which said, “WhatsApp cares deeply about the safety of our users. It’s easy to block any phone number and we encourage users to report problematic messages to us so we can take action.”(1)
