Pundi Recipe | Mangalorean Pundi Recipe

What’s Cooking India? Pundi is a soft round shaped rice dumpling recipe which belongs to Mangalore cuisine. It is a native dish of Tulu Nadu region. It is made by grinding, tempering, cooking and final steaming the rice flour. It is very easy to make like other South Indian cuisines.

Just add all the ingredients, cook in a pan, and then steam the Pundi. That’s it. This is so easy. It can be a perfect healthy snack for breakfast or for a brunch or you can also take this in your tiffin. I am sure that it won’t keep your stomach empty.

Ingredients for Pundi Recipe

Idli Rava 1 Cup
Urad Dal 1 tsp
Grated Coconut ½ Cup
Mustard Seeds (Rai) ½ tsp
Urad Dal 1 tsp
Red Chilli (Dried) 2
Fenugreek Seeds (Methi) ¼ tsp
Curry Leaves 5 to 7
Oil 3 tsp
Water 3 cup
Salt According to your taste

 

Method to Cook Pundi Recipe | Rice Dumpling Recipe

1) Steps to make Idli Rava

Step 1: Rinse 2 cups of normal rice or Sona Masoori rice properly for 2 to 3 times and then soak it for 2 to 3 hours.

Step 2: Now, drain the whole water using a muslin cloth or a normal cloth.

Step 3: Keep it aside in a warm airy place to dry.

Step 4: After it is completely dry which may take another 2 to 3 hours, grind in a blender and make a fine powder of it.

Now, you can store it in an airtight container and use it anytime for making idlis, dosas, etc.

2) Steps to make the Pundi

Step 1: In a frying pan, add 3 tbsp oil and heat it on a high flame.

Step 2: After the oil id hot, medium the flame and add 1 tsp mustard seeds, urad dal 1 tsp, 2 dried red chilli, ¼ tsp methi seeds, and also some curry leaves.

Step 3: Now, after 1 minute, add 1 cup Idli rava and stir it all together.

Step 4: Keep the flame on medium and cook it for 5 minutes.

Step 5: Now, add ½ cup grated coconut and 1 tsp salt.

Step 6: Keep stirring until the mixture turns thick.

Step 7: As soon as the mixture turns thick and separates from the bottom of the pan, remove it in a large plate and allow it to cool down.

Step 7: Don’t let it cool completely, start preparing round balls when the mixture is slightly warm.

Step 8: To make round balls, wet your hands a little, take a small amount of dough in between your hands and start rolling it.

Step 9: After you have prepared a perfectly round shape, use your thumb and make a hole in the middle of the dough ball.

Step 10: Place all the Pundi in a steamer. You can also use Idli steamer as well. Grease the bottom of the steamer so that the pundi doesn’t sick to the base.

Step 11: Now, steam it for 5 to 8 minutes.

Now, your Pundi is ready to be served. Serve it with Coconut chutney.

Tips for a perfect Pundi Recipe

  1. For a better taste, serve it with coconut chutney.
  2. If you don’t have idli steamer, then you can do one thing, take a large vessel in which fill half of the vessel with water and then cover it with a clean cloth. Then bring the vessel to boil. Also, keep the Pundi’s over the cloth and cover it with lid.
  3. Remember to make a hole in the middle of the Pundi. This will ensure that your Pundi is cooked properly.
