Onion Uttapam Recipe (South Indian Breakfast)

What’s Cooking India? Today its Onion Uttapam. As I said, the majority of people search for South Indian foods whenever they are feeling hungry, or even if they are not hungry. Just a delicious fragrance of any south Indian food will bring 2 to 3 litres of water in your mouth. Restaurants also charge a bit more than usual for a small piece of Uttapam or any other dish.

For eg: only 3 pieces of idli could cost around 50 to 60 rupees. Why give them so much when you can prepare all these at the comfort of your home. Ingredients for Onion Uttapam Recipe

For Onion Uttapam Batter
Chana Dal1 tbsp
Parboiled Rice (Idli Dosa Rice)½ Cup
Regular Rice1 ½ Cup
Urad Dal½ Cup
Poha (Flattened Rice)4 to 4 ½ Cup
SaltAs per your taste
For Onion Uttapam
Onions (thinly sliced)3-4 medium sized
Green chillies1-2 (Chopped)
Dhaniya Patta (Coriander leaves)2 tbsp (Chopped)
Jeera powder (Optional)1-2 tbsp (roasted)
Oil / GheeFor Cooking & greasing

Methods to Prepare Onion Uttapam:

Steps To Make Onion Uttapam

Step 1: Take a big bowl. Add rice, chana dal, and urad dal and rinse it well. Soak them for about 6-7 hours in enough water.

Step 2: Drain out the water.

Step 3: Now take a separate bowl, add 4 to 4 ½ cups of Poha and wash it well. Add enough water and let them soak for about 25-30 minutes.

Step 4: Now take a blender, add the Poha along with soaked urad dal, chana dal and salt. Also add a little bit of water into the mixture.

Step 5: Blend the batter well. Remember the consistency of the batter should not be too thick or too runny.

Step 6: Pour the batter in a bowl and set it aside.

Step 7: Now in the same blender, add soaked rice and 1 tbsp of water into the blender. Blend them well for about 3-4 minutes.

Step 8: Now pour the rice batter into the already prepared batter (Refer point no 6).

Step 9: Mix both the batter well and let it ferment overnight.

Final Steps To Make Onion Uttapam

Step 1: Heat a non-stick frying pan on medium-high flame. Brush the pan with oil or ghee (optional).

Step 2: Pour a ladle full of dosa batter in the middle of the pan and start spreading it in a circular motion. The size of the dosa should be equal to that of a medium-sized pancake. Let it cook for about 1-2 minutes on medium flame

Step 3: Add 1 tsp of oil (or Ghee) on the top of the dosa and spread it evenly. Let it cook for another 30-40 seconds.

Step 4: Now sprinkle 2 tbsp of onions, ½ tsp of green chillies, 1 tsp of coriander leaves and ½ tsp of jeera powder (optional) over the dosa.

Step 5: Cover the lid and let it cook for 20-30 seconds. Now carefully flip the dosa and let it cook for another 1-2 minutes on low flame.

Step 6: Repeat the same procedure for the remaining uttapam batter.

Your onion uttapam is ready to be enjoyed!! Serve it hot with coconut chutney.

Tips for the best Onion Uttapam Recipe

  1. Make the batter thick. Onion Uttapams are not prepared like dosa.
  2. You can add any veggie over the Uttapam. Depends on your taste and choice. Tomato, onion, beans, etc.
  3. Cook the Uttapams from low to medium flame. It will prevent the base of the Uttapam from burning.
  4. Serve the Uttapam with Coconut Chutney.
  5. Make the Uttapam thick. Otherwise, it may break while flipping.
