Jeera Fried Rice | Jeera Rice And Dal Fry Recipe

What’s Cooking India? Its jeera fried rice recipe. Jeera fried rice is one of the most popular dishes in Indian Restaurants and Dhabas.

It is majorly eaten with Dal Makhni, Paneer Tikka Masala, Dal Tadka, or with any other curry.

Jeera is an Indian name for Cumin. Although many spices are used in cooking Indian dishes, Cumin is a major role player in among them.

It not only enhances the taste but also adds many nutritional values to its recipes.

Jeera works great on your digestive system. It is also a pretty good source of Calcium, Iron, Protein, and many more.[1]

There are 2 methods of preparing jeera fry rice. One is by mixing all the ingredients including the jeera and the dry spices with the boiled rice.

Second is known as One-Pot Recipe where all the ingredients along with raw rice are cooked together. One-Pot recipe is also known as Jeera Pulao.


Jeera Fry Rice Recipe

Steps to make Jeera Rice Ingredients

Water 4 Cups
Basmati Rice 1 Cup
Indian Bay Leaf (Tej Patta) 1
Black Cardamom (Badi Elaichi) 1
Green Cardamom (Choti Elaichi) 2
Cinnamon (Dalchini) ½ Inch
Mace (Javitri) 1 Single strand
Cloves (Lavang) 2
Salt According to your requirement
Ghee 2 Tbsp
Green Chili (Optional) 1
Cumin Seeds (Jeera) 2 Tsp
Coriander leaves (Chopped) 1 Tbsp


Jeera Fried Rice

Method 1: Jeera rice preparation with boiled basmati rice.

Step 1: Take 1 cup of Basmati rice in a pan.

Step 2: Rinse it thoroughly. See to it that the water is clear at the end free of all the starch.

Step 3: Soak the basmati rice for 30 minutes and then drain all the water and keep aside.

Step 4: Take a large Boiling pan, add 4 cups of water and let it boil.

Step 5: Then, add Indian Bay Leaf (Tej Patta), Black Cardamom (Badi Elaichi), Green Cardamom (Choti Elaichi), Cinnamon (Dalchini), Mace (Javitri), Cloves (Lavang), and Salt along with rice. Let it simmer on low flame uncovered.

Step 6: Stop cooking the rice once it becomes slightly tender. Remove the excess water and keep it aside and let it cool.

Step 7: Now, heat 2 Tbsp oil in a frying pan.

Step 8: Add 2 Tbsp Cumin seeds, Green Chilies, and saute them until the cumin seeds start to pop.

Step 9: Switch off the flame and pour the whole tempering into rice that is kept aside.

Step 10: Using a spoon or fork, mix the tempering and rice properly. Add chopped coriander leaves while mixing or garnishing. Both will work.

Your Jeera rice is ready.

Method 2: One-Pot Recipe

Step 1: Take 1 Cup Basmati rice in a bowl and rinse thoroughly. Rinse it until clear water out of the rice.

Step 2: After it is done, let it soak in water for 30 minutes.

Step 3: Take a frying pan, heat 2 Tbsp Ghee on a medium flame. Add 2 Tsp of Cumin seeds and let it crackle.

Step 4: Now, add all the spices (Cinnamon, Green Cardamoms, Black Cardamoms, Bay Leaf, Peppercorns, Cloves, and Mace.

Step 5: Saute for a few seconds and then immediately add the soaked rice leaving the water behind.

Step 6: Keep sauteeing the rice for a minute or two.

Step 7: Now, add 2 to 2 ½ Cups of water to the rice. Sprinkle some salt and stir well.

Step 8: Transfer the whole rice mixture into a large vessel to cook. Set the flame on medium and cover it with lid.

Step 9: Let it simmer for some time till all the water is soaked up and the rice is cooked properly.

Step 10: Switch off the flame and add chopped coriander leaves from the top.

Your Jeera fried rice is ready. Serve it with Dal Fry or Vegetable curry.

Tips to Follow

  1. Remember to remove almost all the starch before cooking the rice.
  2. Rinse the rice well before cooking. It helps to get rid of the extra starch and it will turn your rice non-sticky.
  3. Before cooking, remember to soak the washed rice in water for at least half an hour.
  4. Dry roast all the spices till it crackles. This has to be done before proceeding with Jeera rice recipe.
  5. Use a fork while mixing the rice instead of a spoon. As it will break the rice more as compared to a fork.
