What’s Cooking India? It’s a dal fry tadka recipe. It is one of the most popular dal recipes that is commonly consumed by Jeera fried rice or normal steamed rice.
It is mostly made up by mixing Masoor dal and Toor dal. This authentic Dhaba style Dal tadka recipe is very simple to make.
A popular Indian curry dish recipe all over India, made in every house and almost in all restaurants.
The tadka or the tempering is made using Ghee, Cumin seeds, Dry Red Chili, Bay Leaf and some more home ingredients like onions, tomatoes.
This tempering is poured over the cooked dal with some chopped coriander leaves on the topping.
Ingredients to Make Dal Tadka Dhaba Style

|Coriander Leaves (Chopped)||3 Tbsp|
|Kasuri Methi (Crushed)||1 Tsp|

Steps to prepare Dal Fry Tadka Recipe
Step 1: In a pressure cooker, add 2 tbsp Masoor Dal, ½ cup Toor Dal and rinse them properly.
Step 2: Add ½ tsp salt, ¼ tsp turmeric powder and also 1½ cup water and stir them well.
Step 3: Now, pressure cook it for 5 whistles or until the dal is cooked properly.
Step 4: After it is cooked, add little water and keep it aside.
Step 5: Take a large Kadhai, bring it to heat on low flame.
Step 6: Add 2 Tbsp Ghee, 1 bay leaf, ½ tsp Cumin seeds, 2 Dried Red Chili and a pinch of hing and saute them for a minute or two.
Step 7: Then, add 1 inch crushed ginger, 2 cloves of Garlic, 1 green sliced chili and saute them properly.
Step 8: Also, add 1 medium chopped onion, 1/s tsp of Chili Powder, ¼ tsp of Turmeric powder, ½ tsp of Salt and ½ tsp of Coriander powder while keeping the flame on low saute it till the onions turn translucent.
Step 9: Add 1 medium chopped tomatoes and saute till it melts.
Step 10: Now, add this tadka over the cooked dal and simmer it for 5 tp 10 minutes on a medium flame.
Step 11: Top it with 1 Tsp of Kasuri Methi, 2 Tbsp of Coriander, and ¼ Tsp of Garam Masala. Mix them well.
Your Dal fry Tadka is ready to be served. Serve it with steamed rice or Jeera fried rice.
Tips to Follow
- You can use vegetable refined oil to cook the dal instead of Ghee.
- You can choose the consistency of dal by adding or reducing the amount of water.
- It is better to soak the dal before cooking for half-hour to 40 minutes.
- You can increase or decrease the amount of green chili according to your preference.
- Preferable use Ghee for tempering to enhance its taste.
