Best Rava Upma Recipe – Make South Indian Rava Upma

What’s Cooking India? As I said, I love South Indian Cuisine, so this time its Rava Upma. If you haven’t yet tried my Rava dosa or Rava Idli, go try out these recipes too. Similar to them, Rava Upma is also easy to make. It doesn’t require much time and also the ingredients will be easily available at home.

It is said that if you want a healthy diet, then you will have to forget about eating tasty foods that will satisfy your hunger craving. But, I absolutely deny this.

Bitter is good for health. But, tasty foods can also be very good for health. Upma has veggies, less oil, urad dal, chana dal which are a rich source of proteins and vitamins. So yes not only bitter food is healthy, but tasty foods are also healthy.

So without wasting any more time, let’s just start this healthy recipe.

Ingredients for Rava Upma Recipe

Rava1 Cup
Green Chilli (Finely Chopped)1
Onion (Chopped)1 Large
Ginger (Grated)1 inch
Tomato (Chopped)1 Large
Lemon Juice1 tbsp
Curry Leaves5 to 6
Urad Dal1 tsp
Chana Dal1 tsp
Mustard Seeds (Rai)⅓ tsp
Red Chilli powder (Optional)¼ tsp
Sugar½ tsp
SaltAccording to your taste
Oil3 tbsp

Method to Prepare South Indian Style Upma

Step 1: Take a Deep frying pan. Add 1 cup rava and dry roast it. (Dry Roast means, just add the rava in the deep fry pan and sort it until light brown.

Step 2: After it’s done roasting, remove the rava in a separate plate and let it cool for some time.

Step 3: Now, take 1 tbsp oil in the frying pan, add 1/s tsp Mustard Seeds, 1 tsp Urad Dal, Curry leaves and sort it for 1 Minute.

Step 4: Then add the chopped onions, now again sort it for another minute or the onions are turn slightly golden brown.

Step 5: Now, add the green chilies to make it a bit spicy and sort it for another half minute.

Step 6: Take 2 ½ cups of water on a separate saucepan or a vessel and bring it on the flame.

Step 7: Boil the water for 3 minutes or until the water starts to boil.

Step 8: Now, add chopped tomatoes to the onions and sort it for another minute.

Step 9: Add a ½ cup of water to Onion and tomato, and cover the frying pan with a lid and let your tomatoes cook for a while. With tomatoes, you can also add, chopped Carrot, Green Peas. Please remember, there shouldn’t be much water present.

Step 10: Now, add the roasted rave and mix it well.

Step 11: Add salt and ½ to 1 tsp sugar to balance the taste. Again give a proper mix.

Step 12: Add the boiled water to it and give a good stir. Cover the pan with a lid and let it cook for 5 to 8 minutes on a low flame.

Step 13: After 5 minutes, remove the lid and check whether the water has dried up or not. If not, then cook the upma for some more time until the water dries up.

Now your Suji Upma is ready to be served.

Tips for a perfect Rava Upma Recipe

  1. You can use regular Rava/Semolina or slightly thick rava which is also easily available in the market.
  2. Don’t dry roast the rava for too long. It should be light brown.
  3. You can also add Cumin seeds with Mustard Seeds and chana dal along with urad dal
  4. Follow the measurements properly. If not followed, it may change the taste of Rava Upma.
  5. You have an option to choose different vegetables with or instead of carrots and green peas.
